4BR has been informed that there was not one but two reasons for the brass band movement in the UK to celebrate The Queen's Birthday Honours List this year, with the euphonium legend Lyndon Baglin joined by Diane Pannell in becoming a recipient of the British Empire Medal (BEM).

Outstanding service

A band spokesperson told 4BR: "The award is in recognition of her many years of outstanding service to music in the local community.

As a player, teacher and conductor, Di has inspired musicians of all ages. Since the early 1980s she has taught dozens of young people to play and conducted the successful Haverhill and then Soham Youth and smaller youth brass groups."

Energised

They added: "Returning to Haverhill Youth and Community Band in 2002, she energised it into one that brought together around 30 musicians aged from 5 to 70 years of age, and which now regularly performs concerts on its own and alongside local bands.

Di also finds the time to conduct Hadstock Silver Band, taking them this year to their highest ever placing at the Area contest."

The award also recognises the thousands of extra hours Diane has put into both performing arts and PE activities within local schools.

Enhanced lives

Haverhill Silver Band President, Len Jacobs added: "We're delighted that Di's dedication and commitment over such a long period has been recognised in this way.

Alongside her husband Richard, their efforts have enhanced the lives of many local musicians, both young and old."
