Report & Result: 2018 Newtown March & Open Air contest

Although numbers were down this year the quality was certainly up as Porthaethwy Menai Bridge claimed the honours in mid Wales.

Gavin Saynor led the massed bands performance before the results

It was quality rather than quantity this year at the Newtown March & Open Air contest.

Despite only seeing five bands take part, music adjudicator Gavin Saynor said he was "very impressed"and complimented the contenders on their high standard of playing in their varied, challenging programmes.

Meanwhile, deportment judge, Colour Sgt. Chris Bailey was also impressed, commenting on the high standards maintained in presentation and marching.

Entertainment

Following the march discipline down the local High Street, the bands came to the Town Hall grounds for the music element where a large and appreciative audience were rewarded with a feast of entertainment.

Led by MD Chris Williams Porthaethwy Menai Bridge eventually claimed the honours with Newtown Silver gaining first prize for deportment. Both bands joined forces at the conclusion of the contest to perform a short concert for the public.

Massed bands

During the collation of the results, the competitors joined together for a massed band performance of the famous march, 'Slaidburn' conducted by Gavin.

The organisers also thanked sponsors, Newtown Town Council and Newtown Carnival Trust for their generous support as well as the band who made it to the pretty rural town to compete at the event.
