Dr. Robert Childs will become the new Musical Director of the Flowers Band following the news that his son, David will relinquish his position as principal conductor following the band's 50th Anniversary concert in Gloucester Cathedral in May.
He will make his first contest performance with the current West of England and Butlins Champion at the British Open at Symphony Hall in September — a contest he won six times as a conductor.
Looking forward
"I'm delighted with the appointment and look forward to working with the band,"Bob told 4BR, whilst Flowers Band Chairman Mike James replied: "We are delighted to welcome Dr Childs — a musician of the highest calibre with vast elite level experience.
We would also like to thank David for the outstanding contribution he has made during the past 12 months and we wish him every success for the future."
Passing the baton
As revealed on 4BR, David Childs has accepted the appointment as Professor of Euphonium at the University of North Texas in Dallas, a role that starts in August this year.
He added: "I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with Flowers and would like to thank them and Associate Conductor, Steve Sykes for their support.
However, at this stage I'm delighted to be passing the baton on to my father and wish him and my friends in the band all the success in the world."
Woodfalls
Bob Childs told 4BR that he will continue his association with Woodfalls Band until July, and paid tribute to the South West of England outfit for six years of success together.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at Woodfalls, having been involved in several rewarding projects and made lasting friends.
However, the commute from South Wales has not been easy, but it has been worthwhile in helping them to gain success — including returns to the British Open and the National Finals.
I wish them all the best for the future and would like to thank Paul Street for his unstinting support during my time with the band."
Best wishes
Woodfalls Chairman, Remus Sawyer added: "In recent years we have enjoyed a close musical relationship with Dr. Childs, benefitting from his expertise on a regular basis.
We are sorry to see him depart, but wish him well as he moves on to take up new challenges closer to home."
