Outrage at 2018 Europeans!

An expression of a personal aversion to all the current crises and injustice of any kind in the world will test the elite bands at the European Championships in Utrecht.

uTRECHT
The sound of personal outrage will be heard in Utrecht at the European Championships.

The European Brass Band Association has announced the titles of the set-works commissioned by event organisers Zimihc that will test the competing bands at the 41st Championships to be held in Tivoli Vrendenburg in Utrecht in May.

Time for Outrage!

'Time for Outrage!' by Luxembourg composer Marco Putz and described by the composer as, '…an expression of my personal aversion against all the current crises and injustice of any kind in the world' will be the Championship Section set-work.

He goes on to say that the work represents his awareness that he, '… cannot alleviate or even eradicate these crises with my music, but as a free citizen I believe I have the right to express my indignation through music.'

Brass band edition

Originally composed in 2015 for the Luxembourg Military Band, the work is in three movements beginning slowly with 'Breaking Silence', before gathering pace in 'Troubled' and ending with a dramatic finale entitled, 'Rock the Culprits!'.

Putz arranged the work or Fanfare Band which was premiered by the Gelders Fanfare Orkest at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. The brass band edition for the Championships has been adapted and arranged by composer Paul McGhee.

Mystic Echoes

Meanwhile, Dutch composer Hendrik de Boer's work, 'Mystic Echoes' will test the bands in the Challenge Section.

Derived from the so-called 'Mystic' or 'Prometheus' chord, created by the Russian composer Alexander Scriabi on which much of his later music is founded, de Boer flavours 'Mystic Echoes' with the harmonic characteristics of the six-note chord — perfect fourths and their more ambiguous augmented and diminished 'relatives'.

The work is dedicated to his friend Chris van der Veen, who played euphonium with the composer with Soli Brass, Leeuwarden, at the 2006 European Championships in Belfast.
