The award-winning brass ensemble Bella Tromba will be providing music for art lovers in the heart of London later this month as part of the high profile 'Late Shift' series at the National Portrait Gallery.

Newest works

The free event starts at 6.30pm on Friday 19th January, and will also see the ensemble of Emma Bassett, Victoria Curran, Becca Toft and Jo Harris unveil of one their newest works to the public with the performance of 'Days of Bells and Flying Creatures' by composer Peter Longworth.

His compositions for the likes of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Mozart Players have received widespread critical acclaim, with Jo Harris telling 4BR that the ensemble will soon record it at the famous Abbey Road Studios.

Late Shift

"The 'Late Shift' at the National Gallery is the latest in a series of opportunities that connect us with a new audience,"Jo explained.

"It also gives us the ideal chance to showcase the variety of music we perform — so there's everything from excerpts from Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker' to Peter's wonderful work."

Bigger car

It also means Jo having to bring along no less than five different trumpets for the occasion.

"Luckily one of us has a car big enough,"she said with a laugh. "We each have a busy professional schedule, but nothing beats playing together as Bella Tromba."

It also gives us the ideal chance to showcase the variety of music we perform — so there's everything from excerpts from Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker' to Peter's wonderful workJo Harris

Education outreach

One of those reasons is their passion for educational outreach work, which in the last year has encompassed inspirational links to the Girls Day School Trust promoting opportunities for young female players aged 7 to 18.

Jo added: "Our previous association with Live Music Now and now the Girls Day School Trust is very important to us, as we want to show young girls that there are huge opportunities for a career in music and music performance — even leading to great events at the National Portrait Gallery."
