The history of some of the lost brass bands of Sheffield, as well as one that has continued to flourish since 1889, will be topic of a free talk given at Stanwood Church in Sheffield (S6 5HZ) on Saturday 16th September.
Looking closely
It is being given by Stuart Young, until recently the Secretary and Marketing Manager of Loxley Silver Band.
He is also a postgraduate student at the University of Sheffield studying for an MA in Ethnomusicology, and will look closely at Loxley's own history as well as that of some of the bands in the Sheffield area that are now largely forgotten.
Loxley Silver Band was originally established in 1889 as Loxley Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Band after the church in which it was based. Four years later and Loxley Wesleyan Brass Band was inaugurated and rehearsed until very recently in the band room below the church.
Going strong
Currently based near Stannington, they continue to have a strong following to this day and competes successfully in the Fourth Section.
The presentation is expected to conclude with information and musical examples of the band's most recent PRS for Music and Norman Jones Trust funded project with the internationally renowned electronic music composer, Barry Gilbey.
Anyone with a curiosity for local history and brass banding in particular will be warmly welcomed.
