If you ever thought brass banding couldn't reach out to a new audience then think again.
What about vampires?
Sticky Valves
Author Angela Blythe has just released her first book of the Saddleworth Vampire series, entitled, 'Sticky Valves' — a wickedly dark take on the vampire horror genre that has already shot to number 1 in the best seller charts through Amazon.
It tells the tale of Friarmere Band who find themselves in a bit of a bloodsucking predicament (as you do) when they are making their way back home from a competition on a particularly spooky night.
Gory tale
It soon becomes a very gory tale of survival — with the added attraction of brass band music making thrown into the mix…
Speaking to 4BR, the respected author, who just happens to be a tenor horn player and mother of Fairey Band percussionist Rick Blythe, said getting members of a brass band to be central characters in the book was a neat way of combining the two loves of her artistic life — music and horror.
"I couldn't think of a better way to combine both at once,"she said. "Both have elements of black humour and satire in their mix, so it quickly became a very dark northern fairytale with a twist."
I'm not giving the plot away by saying that you won't quite believe what the tuba players do with their mouthpieces…
Tuba mouthpieces
Angela added: "I really enjoyed writing the book and response has been fantastic. It is a gory story aimed at an audience who would have enjoyed the 'Shaun of Dead' type of films — scary, but fun.
I'm not giving the plot away by saying that you won't quite believe what the tuba players do with their mouthpieces…"
The book will form the first of a six-part series that Angela hopes to write on a regular ten week cycle — with the second already completed and the rest sketched out.
