Wingates is looking forward to its return to the British Open in a few weeks time after an 18 year absence from the competition.
It marks the latest landmark in rejuvenation under the baton of MD Paul Andrews — one that has also seen the Westhoughton band also appear at the National Finals and Brass in Concert in the last two years.
Amazing achievement
Qualification for the British Open was secured after the band came runner-up at the Grand Shield contest in Blackpool in May, with Band Manager Sue MacDonald telling 4BR: "This is an amazing achievement down to the dedication and commitment of the players and our MD.
We are looking forward to playing 'Fraternity', which has a poignant connection to our own history as it echoes the horrors of the Pretoria Pit disaster of 1910 in Westhoughton."
With their 150th anniversary already fast approaching, the band is now working hard to raise funds for its appearances at leading events such as the British Open and has devised a number of innovative ways in which supporters, formers players, businesses and brass band lovers across the world can help them
Open rehearsal
Sue added: "These contributions will help to secure the future of Wingates, and enable the band to continue at this level."
The band will hold an open rehearsal on 'Fraternity' following a performance at the Pretoria Pit Memorial in Westhoughton at 4.30pm on Saturday 2nd September.
The free rehearsal at St. Bartholomew's Church, Westhoughton (BL5 2BG) starts at 5.00pm and everyone is welcome.
