Richard Corbett, Labour MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber has become the new Honorary President of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
Trailblazers
Speaking about accepting the role, he told 4BR: "I'm thrilled to become Honorary President in this, the centenary year. This iconic band has contributed so much to Britain's artistic and cultural life throughout its long history, and I've been fortunate to attend rehearsals and performances, and meet many members of the band, on several occasions.
They have always been trailblazers: from first performing at the BBC Proms in 1974 and at the European Parliament Building in Strasbourg in 1997, to being centre stage at such events as the Eurovision Song Contest and touring the world.
In spite of all its success, however, they remain firmly rooted in their village in South Yorkshire where its band room is located."
I believe the band is part of our country's cultural fabric, successfully blending a glorious past with vision and openness to the futureRichard Corbett, Labour MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber
Leading creativity
He added: "Over the years Grimethorpe has been a leading source of creative musical inspiration and is committed to mentoring and training young players to create opportunities for future generations. I believe the band is part of our country's cultural fabric, successfully blending a glorious past with vision and openness to the future.
I look forward to working with them to secure a sound financial future and ensure that they continue to be able to entertain and delight audiences all over the world."
