The Roberts Bakery Band has announced the appointment of Paul Lovatt-Cooper as their new MD.
The popular composer and percussionist has directed a number of top flight bands over the years, including Black Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick, Whitburn, Stavanger, Woodfalls and Co-operative Funeralcare, and told 4BR that he was delighted to take on the role with the north-west outfit on a full-time basis.
"Having met the players, management team and sponsors, it's clear to me that they all share a strong passion for the band and its music making,"he said. "I'm really looking forward to working with them and building on their strong musical traditions."
Ideal person
Over the last few years Paul has increased his conducting commitments, leading performances with brass and wind ensembles as far afield as New York and Tokyo.
He will take over the role from Simon Stonehouse, who told 4BR: "Having known Paul for many years I was really pleased to hear of his appointment. I believe he's the ideal person to take the band forward and I wish them every success in the future".
The band has enjoyed generous sponsorship from local family business, Roberts Bakery since 1980 — one which has enabled them to recently move into their own bandroom.

Excited
Company spokesperson Lindsay Occleston told 4BR: "We're excited to continue our support of the band in this exciting new chapter with Paul as MD, and we are pleased to have been able to help provide a fit-for-purpose rehearsal space to assist this."
Paul will take up his role following the band's appearance at the Senior Trophy in Blackpool, where they will be directed by Foden's principal cornet Mark Wilkinson.
