This year's Whit Friday competitions have received a bonus foundation stone of sponsorship cash thanks to leading home builder Redrow Homes.

Local champion

Redrow is donating £750 prize money for the 'Local Champion Award' in the Saddleworth & Oldham area on June 9th.

Sales Director Claire Jarvis told 4BR: "It's a fabulous competition which goes back to the first recorded event in Uppermill in 1884. This solid tradition appeals to us, and is a part of the community life. We are also building our Heritage Collection homes in the area, so we are delighted to support it."

Redrow's contribution will provide the Area prize pot for the 'Best Local Band' — open to those based within an eight-mile radius of Uppermill village.

Grateful

Mary Rodgers, who, with her husband Bob, is the indefatigable co-ordinator of the Area competition and organiser of the famous Delph contest told 4BR: "Each contest has to fund its own prize money — a hugely significant task, so to gain this wonderful sponsorship from Redrow is something we are all extremely grateful for.

Should anyone else want to follow suit that would be brilliant too. We'd love to hear from other potential sponsors."
