The Worshipful Company of Musicians has announced the identity of the recipients of the 2017 Iles and Mortimer Medals.
The highly respected composer Martin Ellerby will receive the Iles Medal for his services to the brass band movement, whilst the popular teacher, conductor and cornet player Anna Hughes-Williams will receive the Mortimer Medal in recognition of her services to the teaching of young brass musicians.
Hugely deserving
The announcement was made by Philip Morris, the Chairman of the Brass Band Committee of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, who stated that awards were given to 'two hugely deserving recipients' — praising Martin Ellerby's 'outstanding contribution' and Anna Hughes-Williams' 'immensely valuable work with young brass musicians'.
Ellerby, who celebrated his 60th birthday this year, has written a number of major works for the brass band medium, including compositions used at the British Open, National Finals and All England Masters. He stated that he was 'delighted and honoured' by the award.
Meanwhile, Anna Hughes -Williams currently plays with Foden's Band — an association that stretches back over three tenures to 1989, and has been an inspirational teacher and tutor through her work with through Bolton Music Services.

Presentation
The Iles Medal was first presented in 1947, whilst the Mortimer Medal was instigated in 1995.
The duo will receive their medals at a presentation made at the British Open Championships at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on 9th September.
