Derwent Brass will premiere a new work by composer Mathew Eden as part of their special Brass for Africa Charity Concert at Landau Forte College in Derby on the weekend. Brass for Africa founders Jim and Pamela Trott will also be at the event to hear the first performance.
Personal connection
Mathew is no stranger to Derwent, as he is the son Band President Nev Eden. The 19 year old recently became Black Dyke Band's new 'Young Composer in Residence'.
Talking about his work entitled 'Pulse, he told 4BR: "I was delighted to receive the commission from Derwent Brass, as I have always felt a personal connection to them."
Intrinsic vitality
He added: "Both of my parents were involved in the band's formation 25 years ago, and I have always felt welcomed as one of the Derwent family.
I wanted to write a piece on the idea of 'lifeblood', because in the same way that the commitment and dedication of the players form the intrinsic vitality of the band.
Derwent Brass represents an integral part of the wider Belper community. 'Pulse' reflects musically on this theme, as well as providing a platform to showcase their versatility and virtuosity. Above all, it is energetic, exciting and — hopefully — enjoyable!"
