Latest Gregson CD launched at RNCM Brass Band Festival

The latest CD of the music of Edward Gregson performed by Black Dyke will be launched at the RNCM Brass Band Festival in Manchester today.

Dances and Arias
The sixth volume of Edward Gregson's music will be released at the RNCM Brass Band Festival this weekend.

The RNCM Brass Band Festival will see the launch of the latest CD of the music of one of the compositional giants of the brass band movement — with the release of 'Dances & Arias' — The Music of Edward Gregson Vol VI, by Black Dyke.

It includes the premiere studio recordings of his 'Cornet Concerto', written for and performed by Richard Marshall, as well as 'Four Etudes', conducted by the composer himself.

DNA

In his introduction to the disc, Edward Gregson stated: "One should never try to predict the future! In the preface to Volume IV ('The Trumpets of the Angels') I referred to it as being 'the last volume' and 'the summation of my contribution to the brass band repertoire'.

How wrong can one be!

Since then I have written another five major works for bands as well as creating new versions of older compositions. Clearly the sound of brass bands is in my DNA and it won't go away!"

Dances and Trumpets

In addition to the two premiere recordings his 1974 work 'Patterns' and his 1984 National Finals test-piece, 'Dances and Arias' are featured as well as the new contest version of 'The Trumpets of Angels' featuring Gareth Small, Principal Trumpet of the Halle Orchestra.

Since then I have written another five major works for bands as well as creating new versions of older compositions. Clearly the sound of brass bands is in my DNA and it won't go away!Edward Gregson
