The death has been announced of Eilir Williams — the popular former cornet player of the Yorkshire Building Society Band.
Aged 40, Eilir passed away in the company of his devoted wife Anna Hughes-Williams at her family home in Treorchy on Christmas Eve, following a brave 19-year battle against Multiple Sclerosis.
Following dream
Hailing from Deiniolen in North Wales, Eilir moved to study at Salford University aged 16 to follow his dream of becoming a member of the best bands around.
Having previously played for the Deiniolen, Gwynedd Youth, National Youth Brass Band of Wales and Wingates, Eilir eventually secured his dream move by joining YBS. There, under the leadership of David King, he was part of the all-conquering Yorkshire band of the 1990s, until he had to give up playing due to his deteriorating health.
Most of opportunities
On behalf of his family, his brother Dylan told 4BR: "During this time, Eilir certainly made the most of the opportunities afforded to him, with trips to countries as far afield as Brazil, Ecuador and Norway. He also loved playing in a band that won European, British Open, Masters and Grand Shield titles.
'Bob' as he was affectionately known in Salford, was an immensely popular figure on the banding circuit with a wicked sense of humour that shone through at all times — even during periods when his health wasn't the best. He was a passionate Manchester United fan.
His sharp tongue and cheeky smile was evident throughout — and such was his character, not once did he complain about his illness and its effects."
Gift
Dylan added: "Although losing Eilir will leave an enormous gap in Anna and his family's lives, they are all grateful for the gift they received in having the honour of having Eilir in their lives for 40 years.
Anna and the family wish to extend their thanks and gratitude for the numerous messages of condolence and support they have received during this difficult time."
