4BR has been informed of the death of Ray Cunnington, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, 1st September following a long battle with illness. He was 83. His wife Pat predeceased him.
Over 50 years
Ray was an enthusiastic Midlands bandsman for over 50 years, both as a player and administrator until he retired to Truro, Cornwall in 1998. He continued his playing with St Columb Band until illness finally prevented him carrying on.
In his working life Ray was a Master craftsman lead light glazier, and his remarkable work can be seen in churches and cathedrals throughout the UK, including Bishopsgate, the Leather Sellers Hall.
Valued
His friend Brian Eggleshaw told 4BR: "Ray was a very valued committee member of the Leicestershire Brass Band Association and Midlands Regional Brass Band Committee for over 35 years, and served in several different roles.
Along with Jack Willars and Harry Bray they were affectionately known as the 'Leicestershire Mafia', and I and many more people owe a great deal to these three friends and mentors."
Wigston Band
Ray commenced his brass band career with the Salvation Army, but most of his playing life was spent with the Wigston Band — although he was always on hand to help any band that asked.

Memorial service
A memorial service celebrating Ray's life will be held at All Saints, Wigston Magna on Friday, 14th October at 11.00am, and afterwards at The Crown Inn, nearby.
The service will be administered by Fr. Clive Watts, assisted by Revd. Ken Johnson (Ray's cousin). The family request no flowers, but donations may be made to the Wigston Band — a registered charity.
