Grimethorpe add Bates to horn ranks

The defending British Open champion has signed tenor horn star Jonathan Bates.

Following the recent resignation of Miles Davison, Grimethorpe Colliery Band has announced the signing of former Black Dyke star Jonathan Bates as their new solo horn.

Complete musician

Musical Director, Dr Robert Childs told 4BR: "I've known Jonathan for a number of years through the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and his time at Black Dyke.

His playing is second to none and he's also a fine composer; one of the most complete musicians I know. Everyone at Grimethorpe is delighted Jonathan is joining.

Privilege

Commenting on his move, Jonathan added: "Grimethorpe has always, and will always be a huge name throughout the banding movement, and it's a great privilege to be able to accept the role of solo horn with them.

Performing and travelling on a regular basis has always been one of my great passions, and the band's concert schedule is one that offers a great variety of high profile engagements, yet also allowing equal time to develop and concentrate on my composing and solo performance commitments."

Debut

Jonathan will make his contest debut with Grimethorpe as they defend their British Open title at Symphony Hall in September.
