The National Youth Brass Band of Scotland (NYBBS) has just returned from a fantastically successful summer course in Norway.
Over 40 youngsters enjoyed two days of intensive rehearsals at their base at Asane Folkehøgskole, near Bergen before they took to the road, defying inclement weather to perform in a series of outdoor engagements under the direction of Musical Director Russell Gray and Musical Director Emeritus, Richard Evans.
Unforgettable
Carrie Boax, President of the Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) told 4BR: "This unforgettable trip has shown yet again that the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland is the jewel in the crown of our nation's young brass band playing talent.
The musicians were tremendous ambassadors, representing their bands and country with pride as well as fostering friendships which will last a lifetime."
Joint concert
Engagements included performing on the imposing mountain of Floyen, and a joint concert with the Norwegian National Youth Band conducted by Reid Gilje at the wonderful culture house in the town of Voss.
The players were also given an insight into Norway's musical history when visiting the home of composer Edvard Grieg, while the week also included the annual National Youth Band solo competition, which was won by Dalmellington cornet player, Kyle Fitzsimmons.
Principal cornet player Rebecca Wilson won the 'Best Student' award, while percussionist Ruaridh Neil was named 'Best Bandsman'.
Beneficial experience
Musical Director Russell Gray told 4BR that he felt the trip had been a hugely beneficial experience for all involved.
"It's been a wonderful experience and an honour to be a part of," he said. "Working with these talented performers was a delight. They embraced every musical challenge laid before them, epitomising the true spirit of the National Youth Band — and I can't wait until we meet once more to make it all happen again."
