4BR Editor meets up with Rachel Thomas after she created history in Napier by becoming the first ever percussion winner of the Blue Riband 'Champion of Champions' title.
The 21 year old who plays for Woolston Band won the title against a high class field of rivals including podium finishers Phillip Johnston and Murray Borthwick (above)
Unanimous winner
Her performances of 'Concerto for Marimba and Strings' and 'Meditation' for side drum saw the first year medical student gain an unanimous vote of approval from the judges, Dr Robert Childs, Peter Adams and David Chaulk.
"Rachel's performance was so assured, technically superb and full of contrast and texture — and from memory on the marimba," Dr Childs told 4BR. "All the soloists were champions — and deservedly so. We were very impressed by the standard, but Rachel stood out."
Surprise
For the winner, victory came as a complete surprise — and she was quick to pay tribute to her fellow competitors as well as her family and the people who have taught her over the years.
"It was a real shock — but such a pleasant one!" she admitted to 4BR as she held the prestigious Errol Mason Trophy in her tight grip. "There were so many great performances tonight that I was very happy to make it thought to the final.
I've just started my medical studies in Canterbury after finishing my music degree, but I will carry one playing despite six years of hard work and study ahead of me — it's that important to me."
Thanks
Rachel added: "This is a real highlight for me personally but I have to thanks my teachers and tutors Brett Painter, Rowenna Funcke and Eric Renick. They opened my eyes to what percussion playing was all about — so I owe them so much.
My mother and father will also be delighted — and so this if for them. My mum plays the saxophone and my dad the oboe and live music making."
Enjoy
Although not every performer played to their very best on the night, there was still a great deal to enjoy from each as classic solos were matched with concerti and new arrangements.
Slow Melody Invitation champion Phillip Johnston very nearly made it a double with a superb rendition of 'Concerto no 1' by Willy Brandt, whilst horn champion Murray Borthwick delivered in splendid fashion with 'Concert Piece' to come third.

Highly commended
There was also a 'highly commended' mention for cornet player Kyle Lawson who delivered a fine account of the fearsome 'Mace' solo to end fourth, whilst the supportive audience certainly had their own favourites — with Kevin Hickman the tip of many after his excellent performance of 'Concerto for flugel horn'.
However, there was to be no denying the history maker Rachel Thomas as she became the 2016 Champion of Champions.
