The UniBrass organising committee has informed 4BR that their 2017 event will be held on Saturday February 18th at the University of York.

It marks the start of yet another exciting new chapter for the national competition which for the past three years has enjoyed a highly successful tenure at the University of Warwick.

Remarkable growth

It's now hoped to continue the contest's remarkable growth, as well as maintaining established aspects of the event such as the popular educational workshops and gala concert.

David Duncan, Registrar & Secretary of the University of York told 4BR: "I'm delighted that York will host the Championships in 2017. We are proud of our brass band tradition and very much look forward to welcoming students from all over the UK.

York is a fantastic place to visit and I'm sure that the participants will have an excellent time."

Award nominations

Meanwhile, the 2016 contest has been nominated for the Warwick Student Union 'Best Event' award which celebrates the very best annual student activities.

The nomination recognises the commitment of the event to equal opportunities and diversity, audience development, creativity, professionalism, innovation and community engagement on campus, local and national levels.

Thrilled

UniBrass 2016 Treasurer, Thomas Hicken told 4BR: "We're all thrilled with this recognition as it reflects the values we wanted to bring to organising the weekend."

Outgoing organising committee chair Alex Parker has also been nominated for the 'Individual Contribution to Student Life' in the same awards.

Thomas added: "Those with any involvement in UniBrass are acutely aware of his incredible level of dedication to the event, and this nomination is testament to the inspiration he has provided to both the banding and university communities over the last three years.
