Stalybridge town centre in Tameside will be ablaze to the sound of brass this weekend as the borough acknowledges the contribution of its long standing weekly newspaper, The Reporter.
Birthday celebrations
The Reporter and Chronicle newspapers, read by thousands every week was first published on 14th April 1855. The group which incorporates the Tameside Reporter & Glossop Chronicle is bringing to an end its 160th year of celebrations this weekend with a special edition of its newspaper, which features a hundred bits of trivia and feats about the borough's eight brass bands as well a more in depth look at their contributions up until the present day.
160 to strike up at 12 noon
Then on Saturday (16th April) at 12 noon, outside the Society Rooms in Grosvenor Street, Stalybridge, SK15 2JN, 160 brass players from the bands within the borough will join forces to perform around twenty minutes of music, in the presence of invited guests and local dignitaries.
The players will also play the National Anthem in honour of Her Majesty The Queen's 90th birthday on 21st April.
The event which has been organised by the Tameside Brass Band Association, Tameside Council (Cultural Services), Stalybridge Together and other local businesses is due to be aired on 103.6 FM Tameside Radio.
