One of the UK's most respected principal cornet players has decided to call it a day — literally.
Neil Day has stepped down from the role with East Yorkshire Motor Services Band with immediate effect.
It follows his final contest appearance with them at the recent North of England Regional Championship in Durham, where he displayed his usual classy composure in helping the band qualify for the National Finals for the first time since 2014.
Third spell
It brings to an end his third spell with EYMS and allows Neil to focus on a demanding full-time job and spending more time with his family, as he told 4BR: "I've been grappling with indecision and doubts about bringing my playing career to an end for quite some time.
I now feel this is the right time after 42 years of playing and creating some wonderful memories. I need to commit more time to my demanding role at work and spending valuable time with my family."
Optimistic
He also believes he is leaving EYMS at a very optimistic time, as he added: "With the recent arrival of Stig Maersk, I've every reason to be positive about the terrific future for the band under his direction.
Whoever takes over the principal cornet role will be joining a very dedicated and talented bunch of musicians. They are a great band with fantastic people and a true professional in their new MD."

Opportunity
Neil's departure creates an immediate opportunity for an ambitious cornet player — starting with their appearance at the Grand Shield in Blackpool next month.
EYMS Band chairman Tony Newiss told 4BR: "Neil is a top player who has given fantastic service to the band over many years and has enjoyed some fine successes with us both on the contest and concert platforms. We all wish him well for the future.
His leaving though creates a great chance for someone of the right calibre to lead a talented cornet section in a fully-committed band with real ambition for the future."
