A brand new initiative aimed at providing young musicians with additional skill sets to help them to develop successful musical careers has been launched in London.
The School of Music Business based in Kensington will see renowned music industry leaders teach a series of short, affordable, evening and weekend courses — with 20% of profits to be reinvested into emerging artists in the UK.
Back in control
School founder and director Matt Errington told 4BR: "We're excited to open our school and start the process of putting artists back in control of their own careers.
Our tutors will arm students with the tools necessary to take advantage of the industry, because all too often it's been the industry that has taken advantage of them. The courses taught by prominent industry figures aim to equip musicians with skills and networking opportunities required to succeed."
How the business works
Matt is a former music journalist who moved into artist management. He was determined to help young musicians after seeing terrible examples of artists being taken advantage of, and not succeeding because of a lack of basic knowledge into how the music business works.
Because of this, the new school, now open for enrolments, is donating 20% of all profits to support emerging artists and music business start-ups in the form of grants.
Tutors
The tutors will include:
AIM Award winning Alcopop Records founder, Jack Clothier on how to start and run a successful record label.
A music PR course run by Federica Furlotti, a senior publicist at Outpost Media who has worked with a host of major artists including Bjork and Craig David.
Social Media Manager of Deezer UK Mickey Tropeano will teach a Saturday class for artists developing a social media strategy,
BBC BAFTA nominated film-maker Terry Tyldesley will provide a media training master-class for musicians entering the spotlight.
A course for the next generation of music bloggers and journalists is being run by Kimberley-Marie Sklinar Green, founder of Never Enough Notes — recently voted into the 'Top 100 Most Influential Online Music Publications in The World' by Style of Sound.
New artist managers are catered for by Tim Ferrone, whose background with EMI, Universal and The Ministry of Sound has seen him lead international campaigns for the likes of London Grammar.
