Tredegar to present Press award

Tredegar Band to present award in memory of former tuba player at Merthyr Tydfil contest.

Gwyn Press

The 2015 Welsh League Championship comes to a climax in Merthyr Tydfil this weekend when the various section titles will be decided.

Gwyn

However one award that will be made for the first time will be presented by Tredegar Band in memory of their former BBb tuba player Gwyn Press (above).

Gwyn died in January this year, aged 48; just days before the band was to perform at the RNCM Festival of Brass.

Much loved, respected and missed for both his playing and for his wonderful sense of humour, the band decided that it would be fitting that his memory be remembered by presenting an annual award in his name to the youngest tuba player in the youth section of the contest.

If they go on to enjoy a life playing tuba as much as he did then that would be a great way to remember him by. We think he would smile and laugh at thatTredegar MD, Ian Porthouse

One off

Tredegar MD Ian Porthouse told 4BR: "Gwyn was a one-off; colourful, gregarious and always with the ability to make you smile both as a player and a friend. He is greatly missed by everyone.

We hope the award reflects a little of Gwyn too, as it's inscribed — 'To inspire the next generation of tuba players'.

If they go on to enjoy a life playing tuba as much as he did then that would be a great way to remember him by. We think he would smile and laugh at that."
