The 25 year conducting tenure of David Holland, MD of Haslingden & Helmshore certainly ended on a high recently at the NWABBA Contest in Rochdale.
Favourite end
It all came on one of his own personal favourite test pieces too — 'Tallis Variations' by Philip Sparke, as he led the band to second place at the event and to close the year poised to be promoted to the Championship Section.
A spokesperson told 4BR: "When David took on the role of Musical Director in 1990, Haslingden & Helmshore was struggling with only a handful of players around the stands, but under his direction, and through his dedication and hard work we have risen from the depths of the Fourth Section up to the cusp of the top flight."
Success
Over the years the partnership has also enjoyed considerable success with Manchester & District, Buxton, Wigan, Rochdale, Brass at the Guild Hall and Butlins titles as well as three National Final appearances — including a podium finish in the Second Section in 2008.
