4BR Cheltenham Quiz: Pick a number winner

What was the magic number that won some lucky punter a fantastic Bb Tromba cornet at Cheltenham?

We had hundreds of entries for our 'Pick a Number' Cheltenham National Finals quiz on the weekend — all wanting to try and second guess the maths behind the draw numbers of each of the four section winners.

Winning number

In the end the lucky number was 38.

It was made up of the draws numbers for Fourth Section champion, Usk (9); Third Section winner, Houghton Brass (4); Second Section victors, Ebbw Valley (9), and First Section champions Goodwick (16).

Only five

Only five people got it right from nearly 400 entries — with most people opting for a total between 55 and 65.

One person went in the totally opposite direction and picked number 4 in the hope that a quartet of number 1 draws may be lucky. They weren't.

Lucky winner

The lucky winner was 15 year old Claire Millar who plays flugel and cornet for Tullis Russell Mills Band in Scotland. Claire will receive a Bb Tromba plastic cornet from our friends at Band Supplies in Glasgow.

CLEETHORPES BAND CIO

April 3 • We have vacancies for a trombone player and a bass player. Cleethorpes Band rehearse near the seafront on Thursday and Sunday evenings. Placed 3rd in the NOE 4th section. Other players are always welcome as we may be able to switch positions around
