Ahead of a 2016 move to its brand new £55 million Arts, Media & Music Suite on its main campus, the University of Salford has announced an expansion to its Musical Arts Degree Programme.
New remits
In keeping with its reputation for pioneering new approaches on its Band Musicianship course, it has been confirmed that Brett Baker will head its Musical Arts as Programme Leader with an increased and wide ranging remit.
In addition, the highly respected Dan Price will take on further responsibilities in composition and arranging, including collaboration initiatives such as the Kirklees Composers Competition.
Davoren and Holland
It has also been announced that two of the banding movement's rising conducting stars, Tom Davoren and Paul Holland will take on the shared role of Musical Director of the University of Salford Brass Band for the next academic year.
The duo take over from Howard Evans, who having been part of the Music Directorate for the last eight and a half years has decided to fulfil other work commitments, both in the UK and overseas.
Excellent shape
Brett Baker told 4BR: "I'm sad to see Howard leave the institution as he has been a long-time friend and an inspirational leader. He leaves the programme in excellent shape for the likes of Tom and Paul to make their mark upon."
The new MD team will focus on innovative concert projects and festivals such as Sonic Fusion, the Create Festival, the 40th Anniversary Concert and a new series of wind band concerts. They will also be involved in student conductors' work from first year through to post-graduate study.
New era
Tom Davoren told 4BR: "With such a diverse academic faculty and major plans to further develop facilities, I'm looking forward to working with Paul and adding my experience to what I'm sure will be an exciting new era at Salford.
Creating a 'hands on' learning experience is an essential part of higher education in the arts.
Making meaningful connections between those studying band performance, direction and composition with the most successful professionals from our movement and beyond, is set to make Salford the number one destination for brass students that crave innovation, excellence and opportunity."
I'm delighted to be part of the new team over the next academic year and to work with like-minded individuals and continue the great work of this exciting institutionPaul Holland
Heritage
Paul Holland (above) added: "Salford has a rich musical heritage that provides a unique focus to those with brass band interests and associations.
I'm delighted to be part of the new team over the next academic year and to work with like-minded individuals and continue the great work of this exciting institution."
