The Halle Orchestra has decided to let the market forces of consumer choice dictate the monetary value their audience places on their playing at a forthcoming concert.
Worth
Their 'Priceless Classics' event at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester (the same day as the British Open Gala Concert at Symphony Hall in Birmingham) will see the listeners decide how much they feel the 10 short orchestral works they will perform are 'worth' — and are prepared to pay for their entertainment.
According the BBC website, their Chief executive John Summers said it would let new audiences "experience the Halle and enjoy some incredible music, but on their own terms" and hopefully bring a new audience, previously 'scared' to listen to classical music.
How much they pay
The initiative will also see the audience able to leave the auditorium as and when they wish, clap the orchestra onto the stage (who will also dispense with their usual formal concert dress code) and finally decide how much they want to pay for the experience.
Tickets for a Halle event usually cost from around £10 to £40 — with tickets for the British Open Gala Concert featuring Black Dyke, Cory and Foden's pitched between £10.00 and £21.00.
