Ty Cerdd has announced the programme of works that will be performed by the National Youth Brass Band of Wales on their forthcoming summer tour.
Under the direction of Cory MD, Philip Harper, the band will perform at Neath’s Gwyn Hall and the Dora Stoutzker Hall at Cardiff’s RWCM&D.
Two strands
The selection of music features two strands linking the repertoire with Ty Cerdd’s other youth ensembles (National Youth Choir, National Youth Training Choir and National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales) — with the works of Ty Cerdd’s first ever ‘Composer in Residence’, Hilary Tann (above) and the music of Latin America.
2015 also marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Wladfa, the first Welsh settlement in Patagonia, with Ty Cerdd playing a major part in the celebrations, with the National Youth Choir of Wales embarking on a major concert tour to Argentina.
Latin America
The NYBBW’s programme also reflects the connection with Astor Piazzolla’s sensual tango, ‘Oblivion’ as well as exuberant works by Arturo Marquez and Alberto Ginastera.
New commission
Ty Cerdd has also commissioned Hilary Tann to write a new work, entitled, ‘All the Moon Long’, which takes its inspiration from Dylan Thomas’s exuberant poem of youth, ‘Fern Hill’.
It will be the first major departure for the Ferndale-born, USA based composer, who has never previously written for the brass band medium.
Philip Harper own works, ‘Constellations’ and ‘The Path to Peace’ will also be featured as will the classic brass band test piece, ‘Pageantry’ and ‘Connotations’ which is featured to celebrate the 70th birthday of the composer and NYBBW President, Edward Gregson.
