The 25th anniversary International Brass Band Summer School (IBBSS) which takes place at the University of Wales in Swansea from the 2nd- 8th August this year has revealed the programme of music its delegates will work on.

As previously announced, Course Director Prof Nicholas Childs has invited internationally renowned composer Peter Graham (above) to be part of the exciting week, giving delegates from all over the world the unique opportunity of being able to work with one of the banding movements foremost compositional voices.

Spoilt for choice

Prof Childs told 4BR: “BBSS looks forward to giving our guests a warm welcome. The quality of the faculty tutors and the wonderful venue ensures a high-octane adventure for everyone involved.

All the delegates will be spoilt for choice both in the realm of music and holidaying options on offer.”

Not to be missed

He added: “The aim of the IBBSS is to balance hard work with fun — improving players, making friends and having lots of enjoyment in the process.

The music chosen this year certainly fits that bill — challenging, progressive and great fun to perform. With Peter on board alongside the world class team of tutors it’s not to be missed.”

Langford

The Sovereign and Prestige Bands will perform works by Peter Graham, James Curnow, Rodney Newton, Goff Richards, Ray Woodfield and Andrea Price, although a special place has been made for the music of Gordon Langford, with the inclusion of his expertly crafted ‘Sullivan Fantasy’ and ‘New World Fantasy’.

“We wanted to have a real mix this year in styles, and to show a new generation of players just what a wonderful arranger Gordon Langford is,” Prof Childs added.

“All that, and with Gary Curtin and Joseph Cook as the featured guest soloists, I’m sure everyone is going to have a fantastic time.”
