The Leyland Band continue their Swiss musical connection with the appointment of Northop's Thomas Wyss as their new Musical Director.

The Leyland Band has announced the appointment of Thomas Wyss as their full time Musical Director.

The news follows the recent resignations of both Michael Bach and Huw Thomas from their conducting roles with North West band. It is understood the Swiss born conductor will take up the position with immediate effect.

Open and BiC

As well as conducting all of Leyland’s concerts, Thomas Wyss will also direct them at the British Open and the Brass in Concert Championship later in the year.

However, it is understood that he will remain as an Associate Professional Conductor of the Northop Band, who he directed with considerable success for the past decade, culminating in their recent qualication for the National Finals at the Albert Hall for the second time in three years.

He will also lead them at the Grand Shield in Blackpool in a couple of weeks time, whilst their appearance at the All England Masters International Championship will be directed by Russell Gray.

Delighted

A Leyland Band spokesperson told 4BR: “We are delighted that Thomas has agreed to join us. We have worked with him numerous times in the last few years on concerts, recordings and most notably in our preparations for the European Championships in Oslo.

His energy, drive and above all, his musicality make him the ideal choice to lead the band into a new period of success. His first engagement with the band will be at Chorley Town Hall on May 17th.”

Commenting on his new role, Thomas added: “I’m equally delighted to accept this exciting appointment. Having worked with Leyland in recent years, I’ve found them to be a professional and hardworking group of musicians, and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Understand reasons

Meanwhile, a Northop Band spokesman told 4BR: “Whilst sad to lose Tom, we understand the reasons for his decision and we wish him all the best in the future. Tom feels that the time was right to seek new challenges, but we are delighted he aims to continue his link with us on an Associate Professional basis in the future.”

During his tenure Thomas Wyss led Northop in qualifying for the National Finals in the First and Championship Sections on five occasions, as well winning the Senior Cup in 2012.

Indebted

The spokesperson added: “The band members are greatly indebted for the many years of service that Tom has given us since 1994.

He has brought us many memorable performances, not least our recent 2015 Welsh Area qualification performance which has enabled us to compete at the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall London once again.

We will now advertise for a new Professional MD.”
