Dalmellington Junior Band players recently took part took part in the 2015 Cecil Oughton Slow Melody Competition — the 70th time the event has taken place.
Held at Dalmellington Community Centre there was a great day of music making to enjoy — from debutants such as Simone Clark on horn and Daisy Millar on trombone up to more advanced performers.
Winners
In the Intermediate Section, it was Aimee Wilson on cornet who took the Burnfoot Trophy, whilst Rebecca Wilson claimed the Kennedy Trophy in the Advanced category.
The George F. Monksfield Trophy, for the player, thought by conductors and tutors, to have made excellent progress during the year, was won by Emma Blain, whilst the Ray & Bobby Dunn Trophy, for the ‘Player of the Year’, as voted by the players, was jointly won by Emma Blain and Olivia McCutcheon.
The Bill Shipley Memorial Trophy, for the top cornet player went to Rebecca Wilson, with the Albert Carr Memorial Trophy for the top horn/flugel player won by Ciara Wilson on flugel horn.
Audience choice
A brand new ‘audience choice’ trophy donated by Anne McLelland in memory of her husband John McLelland in the Advanced Section went also went to Rebecca Wilson.
A spokesperson told 4BR: “We were delighted to have Stephen Murray, the principal cornet player with the Drogheda Band in Ireland as our adjudicator and guest soloist. He was on fantastic form playing two solos accompanied by the band in the evening concert.”
