The oldest brass band in the world...

With 2229 years on the clock and 1605 of brass band experience — only Methuselah is missing from the ranks of Westwood Over 50's Band in Oldham.

4BR has been contacted by The Westwood Over 50’s Band based in Oldham, who have suggested that they may well be the oldest brass band in the world — although not in terms of the date of when they were formed.

Tot up

A recent tot up of average ages and the total age of all the players who meet every Tuesday afternoon for a blow, has revealed some startling stats!

Experience

Trevor Hughes, who is the youngest player told 4BR.”We are past lying about our ages to impress people, so we think the figures are right!

With the full line up of players plus MD Pat Ward, the combined ages of the thirty members is 2229 years, of which 1605 years is active playing in brass bands."

Average age

He added: "We have an average age of 74.3 and average playing time in brass bands of 53.5 years — so we think there can’t be many bands anywhere in the world that can beat us for experience!”
