4BR has been contacted by The Westwood Over 50’s Band based in Oldham, who have suggested that they may well be the oldest brass band in the world — although not in terms of the date of when they were formed.

A recent tot up of average ages and the total age of all the players who meet every Tuesday afternoon for a blow, has revealed some startling stats!

Average age
He added: "We have an average age of 74.3 and average playing time in brass bands of 53.5 years — so we think there can’t be many bands anywhere in the world that can beat us for experience!”
