The European Brass Band Association (EBBA) has released the list of competing bands and the set works that will be used at the 2015 Championship event at the Konzerthaus in Freiburg, Germany from the 1st-3rd May.
The God Particle
The set work in the Championship Section is entitled, ‘The God Particle’ by composer Rolf Rudin, a new composition inspired in part by the search and confirmation of the existence of the ‘Higgs-Boson’ particle through the work undertaken by Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland.
Meanwhile, competitors in Challenge Section will perform ‘Origenes’ (sub-titled ‘Ursprünge/Provenance’) by Carlos Cardenas, a new work that owes much to the composer’s roots in South America and which utilises a range of Latin rhythms and extensive percussive effects.
Youth works
It was also announced that bands in the Premier Section of the European Youth Brass Band Contest will perform ‘Arcana’ by Belgian composer Kevin Houben. The ten-minute work was the first prize winner at EBBA’s European Composers Competition in 2006.
The test-piece for the Development Section is ‘Patterns’ by Edward Gregson, a six-minute piece originally commissioned for the National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 1974.
