4BR has been informed of the death of Tredegar Town Band’s BBb tuba player Gwyndreath Press, who passed away earlier today (Thursday 22nd January) following a heart attack. He was 48.
Stunned
Tredegar Town Band President Iwan Fox said his death had stunned everyone.
“Gwyn was in rehearsal on Monday evening, looking forward to playing Gavin Higgins new work, which he loved as it contained so many of his favourite pedal notes. The news of his death which reached us this afternoon has simply stunned us all.”
Genuine
He added: “Gwyn was one of the nicest blokes you could ever meet; a genuine, funny, kind soul who enjoyed life and the friends he made along the way.
The band was an extension of that for him for over 20 years, and in return friends and colleagues loved him for his eccentricities, his humour, commitment and dedication. He will be greatly missed by us all.”
Dedication
MD Ian Porthouse said that the band will dedicate their performance at the RNCM Festival of Brass to the memory of the former Army musician and care worker.
“The tragic news has come as a huge shock to everyone. Gwyn was one of those players that you always enjoyed having in your band."
Superb player
He added: "He was a superb player and great company; a man who knew what was important to him, but always put others first — especially with the band. He will be at the forefront of our minds when we take to the stage at the RNCM on Saturday.”
Further details about funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as possible.
