Tredegar Pride

Following the worldwide success of the British film ‘Pride’, which this week was nominated for three BAFTA Awards, Tredegar Band has announced that it will perform at the 2015 London Pride event on 27th June.

Huge public parade

The huge public parade which attracts over 1 million revellers and visitors is one of the capital’s most colourful, exciting and friendly public occasions, and commemorates the historic trials and tribulations of the global lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community while celebrating equality rights, sexual diversity, and gender variance.

The film itself recalls the real troubles and comic misunderstandings of the friendship and support that emerges between a small Welsh mining community and the founders of the London based ‘Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners’ group (LGSM) at the height of the 1984 Miners Strike,

30th anniversary

Following the success of ‘Pride’, the band (which plays a significant part of the film soundtrack) was contacted to see if they and would lead the 30th anniversary LGSM part of the event, by the group’s organiser Mike Jackson.

“We had to have the band with us,” Mike told 4BR. “It’s the 30th anniversary of the miners themselves coming to ‘Pride ‘85’and the film has of course been a huge success.

The sound track is simply wonderful, so we couldn’t think of anyone better help us celebrate on the day. We are delighted that the band will be joining us in London in June.”

Support and solidarity

A Kickstarter fund raising project has already met its target, with Mike (whose role in the film is played by award winning actor Joe Gilgun) and Tredegar Band believing that the partnership also shows a renewed display of support and solidarity.

“As soon we announced the news that the band would be playing, people wanted to help. It really does show how respected and how important brass bands are. It’s going to be a fantastic show of support.”

Honoured

Tredegar Band Secretary Alwyn Powell told 4BR: “We are thrilled and honoured to be asked to be a part of the London Pride event.

The support LGSM gave the mining community in south Wales was immense.

It is a real honour to be asked and to be able to lead the LGSM once again in what is such a wonderful celebration of support, understanding and solidarity.”
