Tuba triumphs at Abertillery awards night

It was the players from the lower end of the band that scooped the gongs at Abertillery Band's recent annual awards night.

Abertillery

Abertillery Town Band recently held their annual social evening where players from the lower end of the band dominated the awards that were handed out after a successful contesting year.

Best section

The ‘Best Section’ award went to the hard working tuba team, whilst second trombone David Jones claimed the ‘Over 25-year-old Player of the Year’ picked by MD, Josh Ruck.

Talent young percussionist Elisabeth Millar took the ‘Under 25 Most Improved Player’ award in recognition of her impressive progress since moving from the horn section during the summer.

Solo baritone, Sarah Price, received the ‘Player’s Player of the Year’, whilst solo horn Tracy Phillips was presented with the ‘Bandsperson of the Year’, in recognition of the hard work she continues to put into the band.

Special date

A spokesperson told 4BR: “The evening is always a very special date in our calendar, and this year proved to be no exception. Everyone who attended enjoyed a memorable evening of laughter, games and great company.

We were particularly pleased and honoured that Joyce Morgan, who founded the band in 1971, and founder member Pauline Morgan were able to attend.”

In addition to the senior band awards, young baritone player, Callum Clowry, was given a special award for his continued progress and hard work with the Junior Band.
