Radio: Listen to the Band

There will be plenty of brass band music on the BBC in 2015 with Frank Renton.

On air

Frank Renton presents award winning music from Brass in Concert, one of the highlights of the banding year.

We hear extracts from the South African inspired programme of winners of the ‘Best Performance in Entertainment and Presentation’ prize, Brass Band Schoonhoven from Holland.

The ‘Best Trombone’ prize went to Josh Cirtina with his playing of Bill Geldard’s arrangement of Grieg’s ‘In The Hall of the Mountain King’ and ‘Best Flugel’ winner John Doyle plays his own composition ‘The Beauty of Blue’, part of the 'blue' themed programme he put together for Leyland and conductor Richard Evans.

Black Dyke is the current National Champion, and between the competition and the announcement of the results their Gala concert in the Royal Albert Hall included a big band set on ‘The Volga Boatman’, ‘What a Wonderful World’ and ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’.

Richard Marshall revisits some classic cornet repertoire in ‘Miss Blue Bonnet’, one of the current crop of young 'in demand' arrangers Jonathan Bates takes another look at a familiar tune with his ‘Carnival of Venus’ for euphonium star Gary Curtin and Paul Lovatt-Cooper's ‘Fire in the Blood’ brings the show to a sparkling conclusion.
