Brass band fans were treated to a great evening of entertainment on Saturday in Holmfirth, as Hebden Bridge beat off strong competition to win the Brass Factor title for the second year running.
Sell out
The Yorkshire First Section band, directed Trevor Halliwell, beat off strong efforts by podium finishers Hade Edge and Wardle Academy Junior Band with an excellent all round performance to thrill a sell-out audience at the Picturedrome venue.
The contest, sponsored by rail operator Grand Central, saw six bands perform with Hebden Bridge triumphing with a set that included Amy Smith on euphonium with ‘The Lady Caliph’ as well as the band’s fine rendition of ‘Mansions of the Lord’.
Judge’s favour
The band’s performance found favour from the judges too, who said the choice of music showed they were keen to both entertain and demonstrate their skills.
Celebrity judge, John Middleton, who plays vicar, Ashley Thomas, in the ITV soap opera ‘Emmerdale’ later said that the contest was ‘an excellent way to showcase young musical talent’.
Worthy winners
Brass Factor founder, Alex Bray added: “Congratulations go to all the bands for their fantastic performances. It was certainly a tough night for the judges, but Hebden Bridge proved worthy winners.”
He continued: “A big thank you also goes to everyone that turned up to show their support. We managed to raise £500 for ‘Forget Me Not’ Children's Hospice, whilst Brass Factor just wouldn't be able to happen without the generosity of our sponsors. Roll on next year! "
Refreshing and fun
Dayle Squires of the victorious Hebden Bridge Band added: “Everyone is delighted to once again be Brass Factor winners. The concept is refreshing and fun and the band really enjoyed themselves.
It’s fantastic for bands like ours to share the stage with youth bands. Hopefully our performance will inspire those youngsters to keep brass music alive.
Alex Bray and the team do a great job, and we hope the contest continues to grow and attract lots of interest. We are already thinking about next year’s programme!”
