Young stars shine in Salford

Some pretty impressive young stars certainly shone in Salford on the weekend.

Youth shines

The second Salford Saturday Music School was held on the weekend at the University’s Peel Hall.

Using the excellent facilities offered, the day featured Elland Youth Band under the baton of conductor Samantha Harrison alongside specialist workshops led by leading star players David Thornton, Brett Baker and Andrea Price.

Expert guidance

There was also a chance for some of the conducting delegates to work with the band and receive expert guidance from Samantha and Brett before leading on some of the pieces in the final concert.

The day began with delegates joining Elland in a warm-up session before breaking into workshops for the remainder of the morning.

Entertaining

The band’s highly entertaining lunchtime concert was well supported by parents and friends, as they enjoyed Elland’s thumping rendition of ‘Death or Glory’, followed by a superb trio of fine young soloists, with Ellie Watson (horn) playing ‘Silver Threads Amongst the Gold’, Charlotte Horsfield (trombone) on ‘Cry Me A River’ and Bethan Plant’s (cornet) ‘Maid of the Moor’.

Meanwhile, David Thornton delivered a breathtaking performance of ‘Hummingbird’, whilst the concert came to a close with the popular Goff Richards arrangement of ‘That’s a Plenty’.

Elland Youth have been one of the top youth bands for many years and I was delighted to be able to come and work with them. They are a real inspiration to other young playersDavid Thornton

Inspiration

David told 4BR: "Elland Youth have been one of the top youth bands for many years and I was delighted to be able to come and work with them. They are a real inspiration to other young players."

Delegates were also treated to a ‘Q&A’ session with David and Brett before a very rewarding day came to a close – summed up by one young delegate: “I had a great time and made lots of new friends."

Next Saturday event

The next Saturday Music School will take place on November 22nd.
