Last weekend’s BBC Countryfile television programme featured the works of many of Britain’s finest composers, from Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten to Arthur Butterworth.

Entitled ‘A Musical Landscape’ it saw a very sprightly 91 year Arthur Butterworth taking to the Yorkshire Moors to be interviewed about the inspiration behind his ‘Dales Suite’ – with the composer illustrating the opening motif by playing it on trumpet.
He described the minor motif as, ‘…like struggling to the top of the hill — like the sun rising’
