In the run up to their appearance at the National Championships at the Royal Albert Hall under the baton of Russell Gray, the reigning North of England champion, Reg Vardy has announced that they have strengthened their ranks with the appointment of several new players.

Distinction

Former Tredegar ‘bumper-up’ Phillip Tait returns home to the North East to take over the role of principal cornet — a position held with such distinction for over 20 years by his late father Bryan.

Meanwhile, the cornet section also welcomes Natalie Morrison from EYMS and Bradley Hanson from Carlton Main Frickley Colliery, whilst Randi Holm from Manger Musikklag, will be making a guest appearance with the band.

Manger link

Owing to the illness of solo euphonium Paul Robinson, Manger’s Birthe Carlsen will be lead the lower end of the band assisted by recent signing Andrew Hedley on second euphonium.

Improve

A spokesperson told 4BR: “The band is looking forward to working with all of these new players, and to hopefully improve on last year’s 8th place finish.

We would also like to thank outgoing assistant principal cornet, Gareth Johnson, who is leaving to study in Wales, and wishes him the best of luck in his musical future."
