Report & Results: 2014 Fife Charities

The long wait for domestic success comes to an end for Bo'ness & Carriden at Kirkaldy.

There was a long awaited domestic victory to celebrate for Bo’ness & Carriden at the Fife Charities contest in Kirkcaldy last weekend.

Under the direction of Whitburn bass trombonist Charlie Farren, the band claimed its first taste of success since 2008, with an excellent performance of their own choice test piece selection of Philip Sparke’s ‘Dances & Alleluias’.

Clean sweep

The First Section band, who came third last year, also topped the honours in the separate hymn and march categories, as well as taking the prize for ‘Best Percussion’, whilst in doing so they also claimed the scalp of reigning champion and Championship Section rivals, Kingdom Brass, with Bon Accord in third.

The contest is open to bands in each nationally graded section, with the busy Tullis Russell Mills building on their recent performance of ‘Traversada’ at the National Finals in Cheltenham to take the ‘Best Second Section’ prize.

Plenty of variety

Adjudicators David Hirst and David Frame certainly had plenty of different music to keep them busy in the box.

Selections ranged from the winning performances of ‘Variations on Laudate Dominum’ and ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, played by Barrhead Bugh and Whitburn Heartlands in taking the Third and Fourth Section prizes, to ’Elgar Variations’ and ‘Of Distant Memories’ played by Kingdom and Bon Accord in claiming the podium places.

West Wycombe Brass Band

January 10 • West Wycombe Brass Band are looking for Cornets and Horns (negotiable) and a Flugelhorn player. All ages and standards are very welcome. Friendly Band in Buckinghamshire Village. Instruments provided if required. Own Bandroom.


Harlow Brass Band

January 10 • We are a friendly and welcoming band who hold our own Spring and Christmas concerts. We also play at various local events throughout the year. We have vacancies for BACK ROW CORNETS, TROMBONES and PERCUSSION.


Epping Forest Band

January 10 • We are a friendly 3rd section band that have a vacancy for a solo horn to complete our line up. We perform in a variety of gigs and contests throughout the year. Our band hut is located close to Epping tube station and easy access for the M11.
