Rising star Charlotte Ankers will now be able to wow audiences with a brand new solo specially written for her following her victory at this year’s Foden’s Band solo competition.
Postcards from Caledonia
Part of the prize for winning the Under 21 Air-Varie class was to have a solo written by composer Lee Morris, and now Charlotte has just taken delivery of ‘Postcards from Caledonia’.
Charlotte told 4BR: "I was thrilled to win the Under 21 Air-Varie section at the Foden’s competition and was even more excited to find out that I would be getting a solo written for me by Lee!
It’s been an amazing opportunity and he’s really captured the essence of Scotland in ‘Postcards from Caledonia’ — which is a country very close to my heart."
Delighted
Lee, who is the composer in residence with the Westoe Band in the North East of England, added: "In November last year, I was approached to compose a piece of music for the winner of the event and I am now delighted that the solo has been completed and sent to Charlotte who I hope will enjoy playing it."
He added: "As the title suggests, the piece takes inspiration from Scottish and Celtic folk music. This is something that Charlotte was very keen to have incorporated into the piece, in keeping with her Scottish heritage. It is in two movements, taking the form of an Air and Jig."

New work
Lee has again offered to compose a solo for the winner of this year’s solo competition — this time for a new class, sponsored by musician John Squires-Evans, with the trophy donated in memory of popular cornet player Bryan Tait, who passed away following a brave battle with cancer earlier this year.
