Dyke announce Binns appointment

Chris Binns to take over principal trombone role with Black Dyke after National Finals.

Black Dyke has announced the appointment of Chris Binns as their new principal trombone.

Great future

The English champion stated that the player will take up his new position following the National Final in London in October, and after he has finished his commitments with Milnrow Band.

Black Dyke Director of Music, Prof Nicholas Childs told 4BR: "Everyone at Black Dyke is looking forward to Chris joining us.

He has just completed his first year at the Royal Northern College of Music and I’m sure he has a great playing future ahead of him."

Huge honour

Chris (above) himself added: "It’s a huge honour, and I’m really looking forward to starting the next part of my musical career with Black Dyke. I would like to thank Milnrow Band for six amazing years and all that they have helped me with during that time."

The news will not mean that Black Dyke will completely lose the services of long serving trombonist Brett Baker, who will keep his association with the Queensbury band.

Together with Paul Woodward the duo will ensure Chris's commitments at the Royal Northern College of Music can be met fully in line with Black Dyke’s extensive performance calendar.

Remain part

Brett, who has just taken on a new post at the University of Salford, told 4BR: "I’m thrilled to remain part of the Black Dyke organisation.

This will allow me to carry on the work with the Junior and Youth Trombone quartets, and develop an ambassadorial role with the band.

I’m really looking forward to working with Chris, who is such a talented player, and someone I know from both the Yorkshire Youth Band and National Youth Band of Great Britain. Black Dyke has a very strong trombone team which puts the band in a very enviable position."

It’s a huge honour, and I’m really looking forward to starting the next part of my musical career with Black DykeChris Binns

Happy

Meanwhile, bass trombonist Adrian Hirst added his welcome: "I’m more than happy that Chris is joining. He did a fine job at Whit Friday and makes a great sound that blends in so well."

Chris's first concert appearance with Black Dyke will be at Symphony Hall on Sunday 7th September.
