The Lindley Band under the baton of MD Jessica Tredrea (above) recently enjoyed one of the biggest concerts on their growing event’s calendar — the annual ‘Concert on t’Hill’, organised by the Huddersfield YMCA.
French flavour
The event brought together three award winning choirs, Colne Valley Male Voice Choir, Honley Male Voice Choir and Lindley Junior School Choir, as well as renowned local soprano Julia Garbutt to perform in front of over 2000 people in the outdoor event held at Laund Hill.
With the Tour de France passing through the following day, the event had a distinctly French flavour, with renditions of ‘Le Marseillaise’, ‘The Flower Duet’ and selections from ‘Les Miserables’ to keep the audience thoroughly entertained.
New work
With the centenary of the First World War being commemorated this year, tribute was also paid to the fallen soldiers with a new arrangement for band and choir of a selection of songs from the period as well as a haunting performance of ‘Nightfall in Camp’, incorporating ‘Lead Kindly Light’ and ‘The Last Post’, played by Lindley solo cornet, Steve Musgrave.
Excellent music making
MD Jessica Tredrea told 4BR that the combination of fine weather and excellent music making made it an occasion to remember.
"It really was an wonderful evening and a real pleasure to share the stage with three outstanding choirs as well as the talented Julia Garbutt.
The audience were so appreciative of every item and we’re already looking forward to next year...especially if the weather is equally good!"

Firework finale
The evening was rounded off in traditional British style with a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ set, complete with a fiendishly fast rendition of the ‘Sailor’s Hornpipe’ as well as a firework finale during Elgar’s ‘Pomp and Circumstance No. 1’.
