Enquiries are invited from bands wishing to participate in the inaugural contest at the Cortonwood Mining Memorial Gardens on Sunday, 13th July 2014.

Lower sections

The Cortonwood Brass Band Festival will be open to bands with First, Second, Third and Fourth Section National Grading as well as Youth/unregistered bands who will be asked to provide a 20 minute entertainment programme.

Contest entry will be limited to twelve competitors and will be pre-drawn to allow bands to plan their day. The event will commence at 11.00am and will play in a marquee large enough to accommodate performers and audience in case of inclement weather.

Heritage railway

The well known Elsecar Heritage Railway is extending their current line to terminate at the old Cortonwood Colliery site, where it is hoped to create a memorial park, play area and heritage archive to commemorate all the collieries no longer in existence.

2014 is the 30th anniversary of the Miners Strike which started at Cortonwood Colliery, which is located by the side of Cortonwood Retail Park on the A6195, Dearne Valley Parkway, near Barnsley.
