Major Dave Barringer has informed 4BR that he will stand down as MD of Bournemouth Concert Brass after their appearance together at the forthcoming British Open Spring Festival contest in Blackpool.
Loved it
Dave said: "I have loved every minute of being their Musical Director and am immensely proud of what we have achieved over the last four years."
After taking over the baton at the end of 2009 following relegation from the Championship Section, the highly respected army officer helped rejuvenate Bournemouth back to top flight status, qualifying for the National Finals at Cheltenham and the Albert Hall along the way.
New army bands
The Director of Music of the British Army Brass Band is currently leading the implementation of new capabilities in Army Music, including the introduction of three professional brass bands in the North West, the Midlands and South Wales.
Wonderful
He added: "Bournemouth isn’t an archetypal band and are perhaps not as focused or driven by competition as some rivals. However, that creates a unique atmosphere which is wonderful to be a part of and enables them to work so hard for a common cause when needed.
On this basis we have punched well above our weight, and to restore Championship status in just two years is huge credit to the band.
The fact that I have stayed for a further two years commuting 200 miles every round trip is testament to the draw of the wonderful people there.
I fully intend to continue my association with the band on an ad-hoc basis, but stepping down as full time MD will allow me the freedom to undertake other projects."

Fresh face
He concluded with a smile: "They have heard all of my jokes now and they need a fresh face to continue to drive them forward!
I would like to thank everyone for their commitment, enthusiasm and ultimately friendship over the last four years and wish them every success for the future."
