Black Dyke principal cornet Richard Marshall recently led a recital and workshop seminar at the University of Salford.
Performances
Accompanied by pianist Ruth Webb, the educational establishment’s new cornet tutor kicked off the new semester with bravura performances of music by Arutunian and Snell to the gentle tones of Himes, Golland and Simon.
University spokesperson Dr Richard Rock told 4BR that the Black Dyke star had given the students a remarkable display of the art of cornet playing.
Wowed
"Richard wowed with his dexterity, stamina and musicality, showcasing great style and charisma on both the cornet and trumpet.
Having Richard joining the staff is a tremendous boost for the University and adds to an already established team of brass specialists."
Workshop techniques
Following his performance Richard also gave a workshop on solo techniques and the approach to performance practice with a student cornet ensemble, as well as giving individual players invaluable guidance towards their end of year exams.
Third year elective conducting student Ben Fisher told 4BR: "It was a very enjoyable event. I've taken so much away from Richard's experience as a performer to aid me with my final year studies."
It was great to have somebody of Richard's stature playing and working with us. I learned such a great deal!Laura Marsh
