Composer Alan Fernie flew into Wales on the weekend to give a rehearsal workshop with the Abertillery Youth Band on his test piece, ‘Three Spanish Impressions’.
Welsh test
The work, written in 2007 is proving to be a popular test for the competing bands in the Fourth Section, and Abertillery conductor and fellow composer Huw R. Cole was delighted that the Scotsman was able to take time out of his busy schedule to pay his band a visit — as he had to fly back home the following morning.
"It was great to have Alan with us," he told 4BR. "It’s a wonderful piece that the band has really enjoyed preparing on for the Welsh Area contest. With his insight and enthusiasm it really opened the piece up in so much detail. I can’t thank Alan enough. It was a brilliant afternoon."

Challenge
Last week Alan also paid a welcome visit to London & Southern Counties challengers Bletchington Silver Band, who were busy preparing for their challenge at Stevenage on the same weekend.
Band spokesperson Kerry Wells told 4BR: "We had a thoroughly enjoyable rehearsal on ‘Three Spanish Impressions' with Alan, who spent a great deal of time carefully going over various parts and offering well received advice!
His time and efforts were very much appreciated and a good time was had by all! It’s really put us in the right frame of mind for the Area contest now!”
